WhatsApp co-founder starts ‘Delete Facebook’ Movement via Twitter
Facebook endures a crisis of trust ever since it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm with ties to President Trump’s 2016 election campaign, acquired data from 50 million Facebook users for political purposes via survey:
Now, the company is taking a rough financial hit with loses around $50 billion on market value only last week.
That’s basically the reason why “delete Facebook” movement was created
Last March 20th, Brian Acton, WhatsApp co-founder, joined to the chorus of voices via twitter by encouraging people to “delete Facebook”:
It is time. #deletefacebook
— Brian Acton (@brianacton) 20 de marzo de 2018
Even Elon Musk has removed Tesla and SpaceX’s Facebook pages after Twitter challenge:
I didn’t realize there was one. Will do.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 23 de marzo de 2018
The pages of both SpaceX and Tesla are now inactive. Each had around 2.6 million followers.
Does Acton know something that we don’t?
Back in 2014, Facebook bought Acton’s company, WhatsApp, for a total of $19 billion dollars. Earlier this year, Acton left the company to start his own foundation, named Signal. In fact, Brian Acton is not the last former Facebook executive to express his concern about the company after quit.
According Roger MacNamee, Former mentor of Mark Zuckerberg,
“The social network is facing a crisis of public trust that is going to destroy the company”.
Facebook data exploitation business
While deleting Facebook may not be a viable option for many of us, those who want to keep their data private would need to delete Facebook Apps, including WhatsApp and Instagram. If you ask me, I would say Facebook is so big that even their founders are having a really rough time controlling all their users information. Plus, one of the main methods Facebook makes money is data exploitation: it harvests users data and sells it to advertisers and app developers.
Facebook is a big company, I don’t think this would destroy it any soon, but in a long-term, it could be the first stone to kill the biggest social network online. Perhaps Telegram is a good alternative for the ones who need WhatsApp.

Something that everyone needs to remember.
“if you’re not paying for something, you’re not the customer; you’re the product being sold”
Just can’t bring myself to disconnect….
For some reason, it doesn’t bother me if they have my information and sell it. I don’t really have much to hide about me- if anything at all. I’m not sure what it could be that people want to keep away from other companies anyway. But I guess if I had it I would know it..lol. I don’t mind seeing advertisements for things I looked at online. The only thing I don’t like about it is, I wish it would change to something I haven’t seen before. I mean, I already looked at it and I know about it and didn’t decide to buy it. They should show me something new..haha. Maybe I don’t understand what info of mine Facebook could possibly have that anyone else couldn’t get with a few clicks on Google and that’s why I don’t care about them selling it. I don’t know why anyone would want to keep it secret. And the fact that my information is mixed in with millions of others makes it less of a big deal to me. It’s not like they’re picking me out of all the people and wanting to mess up my life. But I understand there are people who don’t think anyone should sell our info much less gather our info and that’s ok with me too. “To each his own”…
I don’t think it’s so much that you have something to hide, but more where do we stop. Is it ok for the Gestapo to come and search your house for anything illegal anytime they want? If you have nothing to hide then why would it be a problem?
Zucker’s so-called “social network” sucks
It’s ironic that, to comment on an article on deleting Facebook, you suggest logging in with your social ID, including….Facebook!
Doesn’t really bother me . The ads they specify to me don’t bother me anyways .
Why would people imagine that they have any control over who mines what information they post on a social network?
I don’t know if canadians were affected or not. They can take all the info they want as the average person has no control over what is taken without consent.
Facebook should never have been used for political purposes, shame on you Facebook !!
facebook start to be pain in the a$$
FB is increasingly banning sweepstakes sharers, they need to go away & a better platform should be able to flourish. FB SUCKS!
Maybe FB will restructure to protect users.
Seems like every Big Social Media Website will somehow gather data, and id’s, etc… And since ALL seem to be crackable, online data will be stolen and abused. Only safe way would be to NOT use Internet or to Never give any information online.
I have not deleted face-book because I only use it to enter contests .
i use fb..but have facebook putiy. fluff busting add-on…
I did not cancel FaceBook because I enter a lot of contests through FB page !! I seldom go on facebook to socialize !!
News that many people using Social Media must hear.
